The film is part of a larger project the two have built, documenting the many ways children play across Brazil and exploring how central play is to human development. You can learn more at territoriodobrincar.com.br. The brief clearly stated that the visuals shouldn't feel childish. Drawing on a recurring image in the film — kids drawing in dirt by hand — I developed strokes that sometimes trace the scenery and sometimes take on a life of their own. It was a playful process, and I stayed closer to that spirit than to any fixed rule for the symbols.
