Germinare - Behind The Scenes - Expansion Spring
Germinare is an immersive, eight-movement composition that explores the entire life cycle of plants. Composed entirely from found objects, the piece aspires to evoke the tonal richness and dynamic range of a full orchestra while bypassing traditional instrumentation. The following is a behind-the-scenes glimpse from selected recording sessions. This is one of sixty expansion and compression springs recorded for Germinare, each chosen for its unique resonance and tonal properties. To capture the full spectrum of sound—from deep infrasonic rumbles to shimmering ultrasonic overtones—the spring was stretched to maximum tension on a modified pipe clamp and recorded with a stereo pair of Sanken CO-100K condenser microphones and Trance Audio Inducer contact microphones. Various articulators, such as a bass bow, rosin-coated fingers, truck ball bearings, and friction mallets, were used to draw out a surprising range of timbres.
